Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was first discovered and commercialized by DuPont, under the brand name “Teflon.” Teflon tape has become synonymous with PTFE tape. PTFE has excellent properties such as resistance to solvents, chemicals, and outdoor stress. Its operating range is from -200 to 265℃, but its practical temperature range is limited to -70 to 260℃ due to the limitations of its coated adhesive. Additionally, PTFE has excellent electrical properties, and it is highly flame retardant, almost not burning.
PTFE tape is divided into two types: one is PTFE coated fiberglass tape, which uses fiberglass cloth as the substrate and is coated with PTFE on the surface, then coated with a silicone-based adhesive tape. The other is PTFE film tape, which is pure PTFE film coated with a silicone-based adhesive tape. It has excellent flexibility, smoothness, and easy adhering properties, making it particularly suitable for irregular surfaces, similar to plasticized PVC tape. However, due to the high cost of the substrate, this type of tape is generally only used under harsh temperature and environmental conditions. In addition to its electrical applications, using Teflon tape to wrap rollers can prevent sticking, reduce friction, and protect against abrasion and scratches for sliding troughs, guide rails, and feed hoppers.
